Having grown up in the northern part of Idaho’s panhandle, I was privileged to have ample opportunities to relish in the splendor of the area’s great outdoors.
The region caters to the interests of all nature enthusiasts with its exceptional outdoor offerings, ranging from rivers and lakes to mountains and forests. It’s a true outdoor lover’s paradise, providing something for everyone.
I’m fortunate that my parents moved to North Idaho years before I was born and I am so grateful to have grown up in such a wonderful area.
The northern Idaho wilderness offers an amazing variety of locations that I absolutely adore. What makes it even more special is the unique blend of characteristics that each location possesses.
It has everything for the weekend warrior and the “roughing it” purist. You can choose to spend your day lounging on the city beach of a serene lake or trekking through miles of rugged mountains and remote forests, braving the elements all the while.
These days I relish a relaxing day on the lake, but I used to be more of a rugged adventurer during my youth. I still vividly recall an adventure from my childhood when my dad and I hiked up one side of a mountain, only to descend the other side and fish for trout in a secluded mountain lake. It was amazing!
The Splendor of Roman Nose Mountain
To me, the ultimate connection with nature stems from the serenity and stillness that envelops me. The icing on the cake was having Roman Nose Mountain so close to my home. Though it was a fair distance away, its allure was visible from afar.
The mountain’s mesmerizing wilderness, picturesque lakes, and awe-inspiring vistas made it a favorite spot for my family. We indulged in various activities such as hiking, camping, berry-picking, and, my personal favorite, fishing in the Roman Nose Lakes.
Even today, the Roman Nose Lakes continue to be a sought-after spot for recreation. The area’s lush pine, fir, and spruce forests create a stunning ambiance for fishing, hiking, camping, and various other outdoor pursuits.
The lakes are prime fishing spots, known for their abundant rainbow trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout populations. To preserve the health of the fish, the Idaho Fish and Game Department regularly stocks the lakes.
In addition to fishing, the area is also renowned for its hiking opportunities, featuring several trails that boast breathtaking vistas of the lake and the encircling mountains.
Among them, the Roman Nose Trail stands out as a favorite among hikers, providing a demanding yet gratifying expedition through the forest and over rocky terrain.
For those seeking an overnight experience, camping at Roman Nose is a fantastic option as well. The region boasts numerous campgrounds, each equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, catering to a range of needs.
These campsites are for tents only. No RV’s here.
Roman Nose Lakes Hiking
Hiking is considered one of the top activities for day trips to the lakes. This trail leads to three breathtaking mountain lakes, far away from any urbanization.
If you love being surrounded by rugged rocky summits and dense forests, this excursion is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
These beautiful alpine lakes are a true mountain-top retreat so be prepared for a scenic drive to reach the area. And once you hit the dirt road, brace yourself for a bumpy ride, which is best tackled with an AWD vehicle.
To be honest, our previous trip there was even more thrilling as we opted for a four-seat ATV to explore the area. It added another layer of adventure to an already exciting excursion.
The journey to the lower lake covers almost 20 miles on unpaved terrain, but don’t let that discourage you – the drive offers breathtaking vistas and several pull-off points that are worth stopping for.
Upon reaching the trailhead, you’ll be welcomed by the stunning lower lake at Roman Nose. The park offers three distinct lakes, each with its own unique attributes.
The lower lake is conveniently located and doesn’t require any hiking. You have the option to stroll along the boardwalk trails and appreciate the unspoiled splendor, with its backdrop of rocks, trees, and wildflowers.
You can also opt for one of the interconnected trails that provide elevated views of the lower lake or lead you to other nearby lakes.
The middle lake boasts an abundance of fish, crystal-clear water, and a picturesque waterfall in the spring. Meanwhile, the upper lake offers majestic views and large fish. If you intend to visit either of the upper lakes, be prepared for a one-hour trek at least.
Your hike to the upper lakes at Roman Nose may take more than 60 minutes. However, if you’re a fan of huckleberries, there are plenty of bushes along the way that might tempt you to stop and indulge in their sweet taste during your trek. You’ll be happy you tasted this local unique berry if you’ve never tasted it before!
Getting there is easy, leaving is hard
If you’re looking for a picturesque drive, you can head north on HWY 95 from Sandpoint or south from Bonners Ferry until you arrive at the charming town of Naples, my hometown.
While you’re there, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Naples General Store, which epitomizes the essence of a country store.
Grab a snack for your hike, and if you’re planning to fish, the store has a variety of tackle available in case you forgot something.
Directions:
Once you stocked up at the store head north on Deep Creek Road and travel for 2 miles until you reach a Y intersection. Take the gravel road to the left and drive for 9.5 miles on Forest Road 402 (Snow Creek), passing Cooks Pass Road on the way.
Next, bear left onto Road 1007 and travel for 7.3 miles, crossing over Caribou and Ruby Passes, before turning right onto Road 2667 toward Roman Nose Lakes.
After traveling for about half a mile, bear right at the next Y intersection, and continue for another mile to reach the overflow parking area.
Finally, travel an additional half mile, passing the campground turnoff, to arrive at the trailhead near Roman Nose Lake 3 and begin your alpine adventure!
If you head here for the first time, share with us! We would love to add to this post and hear your stories!

Roman Nose Lakes in Idaho absolutely stunning! I hope you get the chance to visit soon and experience its breathtaking beauty firsthand!
What a beautiful and serene-looking place. I would love to do a few hikes there. Is it accessible by car, as we don’t have a 4 by 4. I would love to take a tent, camp overnight, and then do a good hike before the weather gets too hot.
Eating the huckleberries should be another adventure on its own. They say you either love or hate the taste of these berries.
Hi Michel,
This place offers the perfect outdoor adventure! While accessible by car, it’s best to have a 4×4, especially in spring. Huckleberries resemble blueberries, but they’re smaller and more tart.
